1. You won’t see the difference in 1080p vs. 720p until you get to a 46″-50″ screen (unless you are sitting only a couple of feet from the screen) AND are playing a 1080p BRD. At 32″, you’ll find 720p works just fine and will save you some $$$.
2. The best 32″ LCD brands, without regard to specific models, for BOTH performance and reliability are, pretty much in order, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, and Sharp. After these, quality is just too inconsistent to take the chance.
3. As to Vizio, and the rest of the third tier junk TVs (including Viore and RCA) assembled from god-only-knows what kind of cheap Chinese parts, read these links!

looking for a 26-32 inch HDTV for gaming?

i’ve looked at reviews everywhere and i can never find consistent information on a HDTV in the 26 inch-32 inch range. I’m looking for a HDMI compatible HDTV to hook up to my Xbox 360. i play almost everyday so I’m looking for quality as well as durability. I’m in the $300-$400 price range – as this is a christmas present I’m asking for. I’ve heard great things about Sony‘s, Panosonic, & Samsung. I know many hardcore gamers are very skeptical about burn-ins on plasma TV‘s, but i dont think its much of a problem. I already own a 50 inch plasma Samsung and i have had no problems with burn ins. if anything i will be playing on this new TV less.
please help me pick my perfect HDTV!

I need help with a tv I bought my mother for Christmas?

I recently bought my mom a flat screen for christmas. Now I’m not the most tech savvy person, but I did research before buying it. I got her the Sony KDL-32L4000 32 inch. The problem was I bought the 780p version (which, despite my research, did not understand until afterward). Anyway, we set it up and I didnt really do anything special, just put all the wires in that were in the old tv and then connected tivo. The thing is iIreally really don’t like the picture quality. There was a problem with the top left corner and they are sending a new one but told her she could use this one for the time being.

What i’m trying to figure out is:
Was there something different we should have done when setting it up (different wires or anything)
Could it be that it was damaged (I feel thats not it because I recently saw another 32 inch with 780p and it was similar)

I just want to know because if the pixels are the problem I’m just going to have it returned instead of exchanged, it’s a Christmas present so I’d rather her just enjoy it than settle for something that could be better.

It got such good reviews and I’m so confused, any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!
Here is one link that describes the TV, as well as reviews from people who have purchased it.

Congratulations on getting an HDTV! When you get it set up and done, it will look great, I promise.

It sounds like you just used the old cables and plugged them into the new TV. Most likely, this means that the signal coming from those cables is not an HD signal, and that’s why things look so bad. Your TV is almost certainly fine.

If you have cable or DirecTV, you’re going to watch to get an HDTV cable box, which will allow you to view things at 720p.

The cables to plug in will be one of 2 types: Component ( a batch of 5 cables) or HDMI (it looks like a big USB cable).

If the cable you plugged in today is just the old coaxial (one big thick cable that you screw on) or composite (3 cables, red/white/yellow), you have the wrong set up.

What’s the best Flat screen energy star flat screen tv?

I’m shopping for a new tv, looking for a flat screen with energy star rating, 32 inch. Asking for recommendations on brands and model numbers, based on consumer experience. Would appreciate vendor suggestions, too, regarding restocking fees, how good a store’s extended warranty really is, etc. Friends have been recommended the Samsung models and Vizio, which I’ve seen and have liked the picture. I actually saw a Viewsonic that had a better picture than the Sony next to it.

Important factors are picture quality and whether the model is user friendly in set up and when changing from one format to another.

I’m open minded to considering any good reviews, not stuck on any brand.
Plan to use it with Wii, wnat easy connection.

admin answers:

I have the Sony SXRD 60″, and have been very happy with it. $2500 is a bit high though. I paid that about 8 months ago when the model was going to be going away. Try haggling for $2000-2300. The current model is the XBR based sets, which were a bit better looking, but wouldn’t fit in our cabinet and were much more expensive.

We have the TV in our brightly lit family room, and we’ve not had a problem with the screen being dim or anything like that.

Sony LCD TV or Panasonic Viera? Any help appreciated?

Hello all. Could someone please point me in the right direction.. im interested in purchasing a 32″ lcd hdtv and i’ve narrowed it down to 2 of them. They are both 399.99 and are 32″ my only problem is choosing which company is better because the tv‘s are nearly alike. The first is a panasonic vierra model number TC-L32C12 which has everything i want and a 10,000:1 ratio. The second tv is a Sony bravia 32″ that has everything i like also with a ratio of 8,000:1 the model for that one is KDL32L504 BOTH tvs are 720p

OKAY… here is where the question is lol. My first thoughts were Sony = BEST so i was naturally like okay i want the sony one. but after researching i’ve found that this particular model was on sale at all the stores for black friday… could it be possible that tv was made slightly cheaper or only for a limited time to sell for a cheaper price. Sony also sells another 32″ tv with a ratio 13,000:1 with the EXACT same specs as the previous model listed. I was 100 decided on this sony until i found out its been discontinued. This is my first lcd tv purchase and im wanting a quality television that will last me a long time thats why im going with a big name but right now im realllllly leaning towards that panasonic viera due to all the wonderful reviews it’s gotten.

All that being said… SONY, or PANASONIC folks?? ive always trusted sony and i do trust panasonic also but theres something about that sony model that makes me question it. ANY INPUT APPRECIATED!! Thank you so much

admin answers:

Ignore contrast ratio numbers when comparing brands. There is no set standard by which it is measured. That means each manufacuter can measure and report it as they see fit. So its okay when comparing models of the same brand, but not so much in comparing different brands.

Sony is Sony. It has its long term reputation. For the most part it gives top tier quality and reliability. Its usually a bit higher priced than other equivalent competitors though because of the name. Though they have been fairly competitive as of late price wise.

Panasonic is right there with them, if not better. Panasonic is a top top tier brand right now. Their Plasma sets (in larger sized TVs) are the best TVs on the market right now. Their LCDs (in the size you’re looking at), also perform really high in reviews. Panasonic probably has the strongest reliability reputation right now (at least from what I’ve read online and many of the TV repair professionals that participate here on this forum).

For the most part its a toss up. You won’t go wrong really with either of those two options. The Sony KDL-32L5000 and Panasonic TC-L32C12 are very comparable sets. For me, to frankly decide, go to a store and use your eyes. See which one your eye is drawn to more. I think that would be a more important decision factor right now than anything on a spec sheet (because they are so comparable).

Anyone know if this Bravia and this LG TV are good (Can’t find online reviews!)?

I really want to get one of these 2 TVs, but I can’t find any reviews on the web (other than user reviews). For example, CNET has not reviewed these.

Anyone know anything about these and does anyone think it’s a bad idea getting a TV that hasn’t been officially reviewed anywhere on the web?

1) Sony Bravia 46″ 1080p LCD HDTV** (KDL46V3000). This is a great looking TV from Best Buy in Toronto and its only $2,000. Only problem is that it has 2 HDMI slots and not 3. CNET just a has a product description and says that it has not had a hands on with it.

2) LG 47″ 1080p Widescreen LCD HDTV** (47LY3D). This TV is avaiable at Future Shop stores in Toronto (they are like Best Buy) and it is called a “Future Shop Exclusive TV“. This is probably the reason I can barely find any information online about it. Being a model that is only at Future Shop, I am concerned about whether its maybe a dud model or something. Looks incredible though and its only $2,000.

Thanks for any information.

I was in the market for a 32″ LCD tv a month ago. I went to Best Buy web site and read all the customers reviews on all brands. The Panasonic tv had the best score for the reviews. I went to the store to purchase one, due to it was on sale for $399. The store had sold out and I purchased the 37″ Panasonic LCD instead. Home Theater Magazine had the Panasonic tv in each of the price category of entry to high level, some brand did not make the list. Sony and Samsung did not cover all the price range. Sony is overpriced and there quality have dropped over the years. Hope this will help you out.

Samsung are known for their brilliant displays, be it mobile phone or a computer monitor. So you can expect a good LCD TV as well.
On the other hand Sony are world leaders in consumer electronics, and sony products are exceptionally reliable.
Considering all the trade-offs I think samsung would be a better choice. Because it ultimately comes down to the technology advancements and research that each company has done.

DVI/HDMI Cable not giving desired results?

Hi, I currently have a Sony Bravia HD TV that does 720p/1080i resolution, and I wanted it to hook up to my computer so that I could watch videos in HD from the computer to the TV. Now Iv been managing to do it fine with 720p videos, even through an analouge connection. However, I recently have recieved a 1080p video, and a HDMI to DVI cable. Yet when hooked up, the picture on the TV is distorted, overstreteched, and when I try to watch the 1080p video it jumps about (I was told the TV should downscale it perfectly using this cable, but gives same if not worse results than using analouge).
You have a 720p/1080i TV. It is quite likely that the TV can’t handle 1080p input over HDMI.

Since your TV is 720p, set your Nvidia card resolution to 1365×765 (or 1365×720) and let the PC do all the scaling.

for that price i got my queen size headboard, foot board, rail for 246.00
plus my free tv that i upgraded too a 46” for 500.00

tax for little over 200 and deliver for 40.00 which included a 50 mile drive too my house and they completely set everything up for me in my room.

i told my parents the other day and my mom insist that i got ripped off or i could of found a better deal and that i could of looked in the classifieds for a bedroom set but i want a new one for my self not a used one.

on that tv the sale price for the 32” was $400 but they gave me the full price credit of $500 and 46” sale price was $750 but i paid the the full $1000 price on it but since i got a $500 credit i bought a $1000 tv for $500.

Put in your mind that sony and samsung are good brands for LCD TVs, we can’t say that Samsung LCD is better than Sony but for the same price and the same wide screen you have to focus on the features and performance of each one of them to pick up the right one.
You have sony products in your home, I recommend you as an expert to buy sony LCD TV

Use a set of RCA cables (red and white ends) to hook your TV sound out to the units analog sound in.

Use an optical cable to hook the digital optical out on the PS3 to the digital optical in on the unit.

When you watch tv, switch to the first input on the cinema system that the TV is hooked to.

When you play PS3, switch to the second input.

You may need to crank the TV volume to hear it come out of the cinema system.

Experiment. This is one of several ways to hook this up. Read the manual, it tells you haw to do all this.

Though it would cause you to lose your settings, just go into the menu and do a reset or restore. That would return it to factory condition and fix your problem. Not the precise answer but a solution none the less.

admin answers:

DVD’s are only 480p. You can get a better picture from them with a good up-scaler. Your TV does that now. Some DVD players and all Bluray players up-scale 480p to 1080p. If you turn the DVD player’s up-scaler off, the TV will do the job. If you turn it back on, then the TV does no scaling. If the TV does the better job up-scaling, then set your DVD player to output 480p. If the DVD player has up-scaling capability, then set it to output 1080p.

Then save up for a blue ray player. They play 1080p movies. Things like the BBC Planet Earth series has photography that is truly stunning. Blue ray players also do a good job up-scaling DVD’s.

Why won’t a PS3 display on an HDTV?

I bought an entire HD setup a few days ago and hooked up a PS3 to a Sony Receiver, and the receiver to a Sony Bravia 46” 1080p 120 Hz HDTV using two seperate HDMI cables. The PS3 then changed settings to HD. Everything has worked fine for three days since buying the setup and today when I went to watch a blu ray, nothing happened. The PS3 turned on, the receiver turned on, but the TV displayed the messages “No signal, “audio only”. It did however show that it had an HDMI connection. At times there were quick flickers on screen displaying the PS3 display screen but nothing long enough to read the message displayed. The TV works, the receiver works, the PS3 works when its connected simply using the red, white, and yellow wires. I’ve switched up the 2 HDMI cables, I’ve used just one connected from the PS3 to the TV, and then tried the other cable of the 2, but nothing works. I’m not a huge techie, but the wires were obviously connected properly if the PS3 has been working up until tonight.

I need help before I go out and pay for any more wires or cables. Is there something really obvious I’m missing?

New Sony Bravia Full HD TV: Picture Not Coming in HD, Looks Like SD?

I just hooked up my new Comcast DCH Digital Box, with HD, to my new Sony Bravia LCD Full HD1080i TV. I’ve followed all the wiring guides and am using an HDMI cable to connect the digital cable box to the Sony. However, the picture quality looks nothing like HD. Edges are blurry, words and details poorly defined. I had Comcast re-initialize the box and nothing different happened. I even took the HDMI cable off and replaced the connections with the 3-plug RGB component cable — no difference at all — same poorly defined, non-sharp picture.

I also removed the HDMI cable and just have the digital box connect to the TV via the coax — that gave me the same picture and seemed to indicate to me that neither the HDMI or component cables were operational.

I checked for ‘noise’ and even went so far as to disconnect/re-connect the Comcast coax coming into my house to see if I could impact the picture quality. Nothing seems to work. Can anyone suggest what to do next? Thanks.

admin answers:

Hmm, this is just a stab in the dark, but what hd channels are you watching? Not all channels are in hd… Even if you have hd cable service. Comcast only has about 30 hd channels.

What resolution did you set the cable box to output? It is possible that the cable box is set to output ALL stations at 480i (standard def). In order to check, tune to a hd station. Next, push the info or display button on your TV REMOTE. An icon will show on the screen what resolution your tv is RECEIVING from the cable box. If it’s high def, the icon should say 720p or 1080i. If the icon says 480i, then you know that the cable box is NOT set to output high def.

Help on HD TVs 720p vs 1080p Sony bravia?

So I’m buying a flat screen tv and don’t no a lot about HD TV.
First of all I want to buy a 32″ but I seen a sony bravia that looked really good and its going on sale but its 720p. The sales person told me that a 32″ doesn’t need 1080p because it would be to many pixels on the screen which may cause the picture to be funny. Is a 720p okay to have than a 1080p on a sony bravia or should i keep looking for another brand that has 1080p? The sony bravia has a nice picture and i was comparing the 720p sony brand with another sony bravia and it was a 40″ and was 1080p but looked the same as the 720p. I am mostly using it for my ps3 and movies. Thanks

admin answers:

God knows what the salesperson told you. The honest truth is that the 720p and 1080 thing all boil down to the resolution or detail that the human eye can resolve.

A TV that’s 32 inches is small, the pixels are smaller than they would be on a 50 inch set, and to make matters worse, if you use it like a TV and sit far away, and not like a monitor close up, your eye can’t see the difference between 720p which is 750k to 1 million pixels (720p sets have different resolutions) and 1080p which is fixed at just over 2 million pixels.

It’s not about making anything looking funny and resolution does not have anything to do with image quality. Resolution is only the potential for detail, it does not describe contrast, black levels, color accuracy, lag time, brightness or anything else so don’t get too caught up into it. People get into it like they do with megapixels and cameras and have no idea the image quality doesn’t always go up when the pixel count increases.

I know money is always an issue. If you must get the Sony at 32 inches, don’t worry that it’s 720p, if it was 1080p and you paid extra for it, you won’t see the extra detail sitting on the couch. I would advise that you save, or use the same money for a larger 1080p set. Sony is good, but over priced if you asked me. It’s not like you are getting Sony’s top of the line. I’d go for Vizio’s VO370M. It hit walmart this summer at 597, then dropped 50 bucks maybe three months later. For a minute walmart dropped it to 497.

It seems to be back up though. It’s full 1080p and it’s 37 inches. 5 inches might not sound like a lot but it’s 29 percent more square inches than a 32 inch. Another bang for the buck that was at bestbuy for a minute that’s now gone, but popped up at Sears of all places is the 40 inch 1080p proscan set, great picture for the money. Last time I saw it at BB it was 499. Sears has it for around 550 last time I checked, or near that amount.

Vizio gallery I put up http://tonyflores.smugmug.com/Mostly-Candids/Vizio-VO370M-UPDATED-June-13/8453321_4EqgJ

password is vizio check the pics carefully, I didn’t even have a blu ray hooked up, it’s HD comcast.

You need to buy a HDMI cable to get the HD picture you’re looking for.

Buy a HDMI cable, not the expensive ones, it should be under $10-$15. Don’t get the $60 or above ones because HDMI cables are digital not analogue. If its digital, there is no quality difference.

You won’t see the HD picture because you need a HDMI cable to view in HD.

It’s simply not enough to say “Samsung [or any brand] is better.” The major brands all have specific models that test extremely well in the labs, i.e Consumer Reports, and they have other models way down the quality list.

When I was shopping for my big screen HDTV, I went to a major electronics store and looked at the demonstrators. I liked the looks of one model, went home and checked the customer reviews on line (Amazon is good for that), then went back and bought it. It was the right thing to do.

That’s my advice. Go look at some sets at a store. Don’t be too dazzled by bright pictures, because they crank the intensity up to the max on store demonstrators. Look for other differences in the picture, and check the specs. You want at least a 120 Hz refresh rate with an LCD, preferably a response time of 4 ms or better, and if you can afford it, LED backlighting. Then check out a lot of customer reviews and make your choice.

I’ve not seen the Samsung, but I saw a Sony HD (might be the same thing as Bravia) that was more realistic than plasma. I would go with the Sony…

They had a Sony HD on display at a store, and it was so realistic. It showed banners floating in the air, and it looked like you could touch them. It also showed a huge green valley and a bird fly by, and it looked so real. A kid just stood there with his jaw wide-open for like 5 minutes.

Both are pretty good, but which one has a service center near where you live?

That should be the deciding factor on your TV set…you don’t want to have to get it repaired 900 miles away, you want to get it repaired locally.

Then you’ll be happy with your TV set, and of course that means the cost isn’t important when it comes down to local serviceability.

Plus, what the heck is a Singapore Dollar?! I think I’d be looking at a Pound converter instead….Google it.

First of all.
I wouldn’t waste the money on a 32″ unless it was going to be your pc monitor. For an additional $200 USD you can get a 47″ 1080P at Walmart. $800 bucks LCD. I payed $1200 for a plasma 42″ inch and I love it. But when I seen that LCD I almost cried lol. Since plasma will soon die and LCD lives forever.
